NASA and competing space agencies should have to draft astronauts from a pool of recruits like the American football teams do. Every state should have its own astronaut junior league where rookies earn their space legs by paragliding, building huts in lonely deserts, underwater assembly of complex objects, etc. You could call it the Space Scouts.

Public interest in space exploration was at its highest during the Cold War when there was a competitive element. In order to bring this back we should mandate that each American state has its own Space Team. There should be a Superbowl but for landing on Mars. The enormous cost of space exploration could be recouped through selling ad space.

Teams could also recruit sportsmen from other fields. Shohei Ohtani should be the first man on Mars. His incredible hand-eye co-ordination would make it easy for him to learn to fly the space shuttle, and his participation would likely attract the public's interest. Honestly it gets better the more I think about it, Elon Musk should pay me a million dollars for this idea.
